How a Home is Chosen for a Break In
We wanted to talk a little bit about how a home is chosen for a break in. It doesn’t necessarily directly correlate to your alarm system choice, but if you’re on the fence about purchasing an alarm system, this will hopefully help you make a final decision.
These notes should be considered at all times, but especially when you are on vacation or not at your home for a long block of time. The biggest reason that a home is targeting in particular is because of its location. Most thieves operate relatively close to their home. It’s easy to get out and walk and scope out your neighborhood when you only live a few miles away. In addition, homes or neighborhoods that are close to major roads are generally at more risk. This is because that road can ask as an easy escape route if a problem were to arise.
Many robberies that take place are spur of the moment and unplanned. They happen because of opportunity. And contrary to what most people think, almost all robberies take place during the day when the home owner is at work or the kids are at school. There is no one there to confront them and it’s easy picking if you haven’t installed an alarm system.
We suggest making sure that your home alarm system is pretty obviously visible to anyone looking from the outside. Having a highly visible camera acts as a large deterrent, even if the camera is fake. No burglar wants to deal with an alarm system, and homes with alarm systems are 3x LESS likely to be broken in to.
If a burglar really wants something specific from your home, then home automation or a security system wont act as a deterrent, but instead a a defense mechanism. But fact of the matter is, most burglars are opportunists. They see an empty home as a free for all, so it will be up to you to deter them from pursuing a robbery at your expense. We suggest reading some of our alarm system reviews if you’re interesting in getting an alarm system!
