Common Alarm System Mistakes for Homeowners

So you’ve made this big investment in an alarm system! We’re going to cover a few of the mistakes that people make when installing their alarm system which may make it less effective. You definitely want to max out your alarm system’s potential, so just be wary and make sure you’re not making these same mistakes!

The first thing we wanted to cover is something you hear about fire alarms too. Make sure that the batteries are working in your alarm system. Even if you have the best alarm system on the market, it wont matter if the battery is dead. The alarm system is only as efficient as it’s owner and we know it can be pretty easy to forget about your alarm system’s batteries since they last so long. But periodically make sure to call your alarm system company to have them check the battery life of the sensors. Some control panels have battery checks too. Those are great for temporary checks, but it’s better to actually call your alarm system company in order to have them check too. We suggest doing this once a year; perhaps around the time you check your fire alarm’s batteries.

Another thing we want you to take note of, is that you must mount your sensors correctly. DIY alarm systems are great because you can install them yourself, and it is relatively simple to do. But you must be meticulous about how the sensor are mounted to the wall. Make sure they wont come lose on you!

Finally, the last mistake that we see being made often is the poor placement of sensors. It’s pretty easy to pick out the obvious locations which you will want to put a sensors. But intruders aren’t always going to go for the easiest option. Make sure to cover all your bases and put sensors where you might not necessarily think to put them. We suggest standing outside of your house and looking at every possible point of entry for your house. Disregard the windows that are inaccessible, but just because it’s on the second floor does not necessarily mean it is indefensible.

If you have more questions about your home alarm system, call up the company and ask about suggestions when placing your sensors around your home. If your still uncomfortable, call up your alarm system company and ask them for some tips. Many of these companies also still have professionals that will come in and install the system for you (although, we think you wont need to do that).
