DIY Alarm System vs. Professional Installation

Traditionally, if you wanted an alarm system, you would have had to pay to have a professional come out and install your alarm systems. Nowadays there are many alarm systems out there that offer a “do it yourself” method. So which one is better, the DIY alarm system or the professional installation?

Well a lot of it is personal preference, but the trend has started to shift towards DIY alarm systems. This is because it can save you money and in general, it means that the alarm system is more versatile. A DIY alarm system is always wireless. A wireless alarm system (that you can install yourself) can easily be moved from home to home, if you’re moving.

There is a perception that alarm systems are difficult to install, and that is why you need a professional to come out and install it for you. This is simply not true. You so not need to take off of work and pay a professional to come out and install a device that you can do just as well yourself. It generally only takes 30-60 minutes. In addition, no one really knows your home like you do. You walk into it everyday and know where all the doors ad windows are. With some intuition and a few moments of critical thinking, it is pretty easy for you to figure out where you want and need your home to be protected.

Obviously, there are more traditional means of installing an alarm system. We don’t think that DIY alarm systems are the end all to be all. There are good home alarm systems that can only be professionally installed. It is obviously always nice to have someone else do the work for you. In addition, not everyone feels comfortable installing an alarm system on their own. In this instance, a traditional home alarm installation can be had. We like to point out to customers who choose to go this route, you should never pay for the equipment AND the installation. It is one or the other. Meaning if the company charges you for the equipment, the professional installation is free and if the equipment is free, the professional installation may cost money. Do be fooled into paying for both!

In conclusion, both options are available for most companies. But we personally recommend the Do-it-Yourself route. DIY alarm systems are the future of alarm systems and we’re confident that you’ll be able to install it properly- and you should be too!
