False Alarms in Alarm Systems
After a really long day, it’s easy to skip a beat and accidentally forget to put your 4 digit security code into you alarm system’s panel to turn off the alarm. Every one makes mistakes, but how you respond in those mistakes is really what matters. We want to go over a few steps you should take if an alarm system false alarm goes off.
The first thing you need to do is stay calm! You don’t want to be frantically calling the station in order to keep the police from coming. Pause. Take a deep breath and focus. Even with the dog barking or the alarm sounding, it is imperative to think calming about your next steps.
The first thing that you need to do is shut down the alarm system. It doesn’t know (obviously) that it is a false alarm and is going to have a siren blasting. You need to go to the control panel and turn it off before you can do anything else. You need to disarm the system and turn off the alarm before you can do anything else.
The alarm system company will then call your home. Once they call you should be able to tell them that nothing is wrong. They will most likely ask you for your password and if you need police assistance. Once you’ve used the password properly, you can hang up and go about your day. If the wrong password is given, they will likely send the police.
If the false alarm was tripped and you’re not really sure why, it might be best to call the alarm system company to get them to check for a malfunction. Although it’s extremely rare, it is always best to check. If you follow these steps, you should be fine if you’re ever in a pressure situation with a false alarm.
