Home Burglaries: What are the odds?

Over 2,000,000 home burglaries are reported in the United States each year.   Yes, you read that correctly.  There are over 2 MILLION home burglaries in the U.S. each and every year.  According to the FBI home burglaries are the most common threat to homeowners in the U.S. – a home is burglarized every 13 seconds.  That’s about four burglaries a minute, 240 an hour and nearly 6,000 a day!

The saddest part about these statistics is that they can be cut drastically if more homeowners invested in a home security system.  Only 17% of homes in the U.S. have a security system installed and homes without a security system are three times more likely to be victims of a home burglary than those that DO have a security system.  Not only does having a home security system keep you and your family protected but it greatly reduces your chances of a home burglary.

Despite many beliefs home burglaries are most common during daylight hours – usually when people are at work or school.  Home burglaries are also more frequent during the summer months especially July and August.  Homes with a lot of “cover” or easy access are more likely to be broken in to than those that are out in the open and visible to neighbors and passing cars or pedestrians.  Even the most simple precautions like locking all doors, using heavy deadbolts, changing locks when moving to a new residence or not leaving keys “hidden” on the outside of the home can greatly reduce chances of a home burglary.  Statistics tell us that over 95% of burglaries include break-in by force – in other words busting a lock or breaking a window.  Of course, the best method to deterring home burglaries is a home security system.  (Read AlarmSystemReport’s Alarm System Reviews)
